Series 1: On the Table Not in the Bin. Embracing Sustainable Choices for a Healthier World.
The ultimate guide for eliminating food waste–everything you need to know to get started.
I feel like 2024 should be labeled the ultimate year of exposure. People, places and celebrities. All ARE GETTING EXPOSED...
"The tea is being spilled everywhere Hunni"
But let's expose food waste instead. Don't look at your garbage can in shame, now is not the time to self-blame. It's time to care... Besides, we've all been guilty of wasting food.
Why Is Reducing Food Waste So Important?
It's important because we must be caregivers of the planet for our youth. What kind of planet will they inherit? Look around you... Trash everywhere, piles of wasted food in landfills while the homeless go hungry. Maybe you think your big or small efforts will be wasted, and nothing will ever change. But your efforts are the start of change.
Do you care about your planet? It's great that you want your body to be healthy but what about the ground that grows your food? If it actually comes from the ground these days, because GMO vegetables are a thing now. Thats a story for another day...
The Impact of Food Waste
Our efforts to eat healthy and reduce hunger are hindered by one critical issue: food waste. Everybody wants to be vegan which is great but it's time to address the startling impact food waste has on our environment and global hunger. Yeah, I said global because we have to stop focusing only on our block. The world is so much bigger...
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO of the United Nations approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted globally each year. This wastage not only contributes to environmental degradation but also exacerbates food insecurity. As we strive for healthier food choices, it's paramount to address the inefficiency of our current food systems. We must do better...
Making a difference means changing old habits to new habits. It's difficult but worth it.
Embracing Plant-Based Choices: A Sustainable Solution
Plant-based, vegan, and vegetarian diets have gained popularity for their health benefits and have helped to reduce some environmental impact. By pivoting towards these dietary choices, individuals can significantly decrease their carbon footprint and contribute to sustainable food practices. By changing how we eat, we subconsciously are contributing to a healthier environment, and didn't even know it... Amazing huh?
It's not as hard as you think. My Grandmother used to make vegetables for us every day as a child. Many days we didn't have meat with our meal. I'm not sure if it was by necessity or choice. I had no complaints, what she prepared was always good. I was raised in the country where gardens were common and wasting food was NOT. My Mother used to stress to us that some people didn't even have a meal or roof over their heads. This instilled gratitude in me early on. When we had extra food, it became leftovers or chicken feed. Also, in those days we hardly ever had take-out food. So, we never had an abundance of plastic containers to throw in the trash.
Are You Ready?
We've discussed the what and the why, and even how we can help eliminate food waste. Now it's time to take action. But before we do let me be the first to congratulate you for caring. You cared enough to read this entire article, in a world of short attention spans. So, kudos to you! I've listed some ways we can start implementing change. I'll be working in the background to see what organizations locally I can link up with for activism.
